Kafue National Park, located in western Zambia, is the largest national park in the country and one of the largest in Africa, covering an expansive area of approximately 22,400 square kilometres (8,650 square miles). Named after the Kafue River, which flows through the park, this pristine wilderness area is renowned for its diverse habitats, abundant wildlife, and stunning landscapes.
The park's varied terrain encompasses riverine forests, grassy plains, miombo woodlands, and vast wetlands, providing a habitat for an impressive array of wildlife species. Kafue is home to all of Africa's Big Five – lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinoceros (although the rhino population is scarce). Other commonly sighted animals include hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and over 400 bird species.
